CLIENT

Legal and General Investment Management is an English company based in London. The leadership decided to move IT services to India. I was hired as a PMO member to help execute this project.

PROBLEM

The IT business transformation programme had two phases, managed by our team as two projects in sequence:

  • Transition Phase - Knowledge transfer and service transition from the UK to the Indian team.

  • Migration Phase - Migration of tools, applications and the data centre to the cloud solution.

However, the transition phase started without organised knowledge transfer between the UK and India teams. The absence of scheduling and management caused chaos and significant delays, pushing the transition milestone out of reach.

SOLUTION

I liaised with the Indian PMO and devised a plan and a schedule, including a communication plan, team introductions and pair-working sessions. Together, we executed the knowledge transfer for all 20 IT tracks. Over an intense six-week period, we collaborated face-to-face in London's meeting rooms and remotely via conference calls. I monitored the progress, assisted the SMEs (subject matter experts), and gave the leadership regular updates.

RESULT

The knowledge transfer was accomplished, enabling the transition to the next project stage. We cleared numerous dependencies and issues. We reached the desired milestone, meaning the migration stage could move through its first steps.

Outsourcing IT infrastructure to India has cost-saving benefits. An external service provider based in Asia managing the client's IT following an agreed SLA (service level agreement) is cheaper than local in-house experts. The project created flexible staffing, provided secure business continuity and risk management, and facilitated employee development.
